Welcome to Hermitage – Sandyville
Located between Hermitage Bay and Connaigre Bay on Newfoundland’s South Coast, Hermitage-Sandyville comprises the communities of Hermitage and Sandyville, offering a stunning retreat steeped in maritime heritage. Established in 1963 and expanded in 1969 with the incorporation of Sandyville, this region’s roots are deeply intertwined with the traditional fishery, a legacy that endures alongside the logging industry.
Hermitage cradles itself in a valley, surrounded by rolling hills that beckon hikers to explore its trails leading to Western Head, where views of saltwater bays await. Sandyville adds its charm with a beautiful sandy beach, perfect for leisurely strolls and wave-watching. Summer’s mackerel catching at the wharf adds a nice touch to the local experience.
The town’s primary industry is Aquaculture, operated by Cookes, and the local fishplant, Hermitage Processing, is the biggest employer in town.
For the festival-seekers, the “Rum Runners Festival” in August showcases local talent through traditional and contemporary music, complemented by family-friendly activities and a mouthwatering menu featuring moose burgers, mussels, and fresh-caught fish.
The local ferry is docked in Hermitage as well, for those interested in visiting the remote communities of McCallum and Gaultois.
