Industry Sector Profile: Hydro

Hydro Industry At a Glance

Newfoundland and Labrador boasts a robust hydro industry, driven primarily by two key players: Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (NL Hydro) and NL Power. Together they ensure a steady supply of safe, cost-effective, and dependable electricity across the province. Major power generation facilities, such as Churchill Falls, Muskrat Falls, Bay d’Espoir, and Holyrood, are instrumental in meeting the region’s energy needs. With an extensive transmission network spanning thousands of kilometers, approximately 80 percent of the provincial energy is derived from clean hydroelectric generation, emphasizing a commitment to sustainable energy.

Sustainability Focused

This hydro industry’s strength lies in its sustainability efforts, with a strong focus on environmental responsibility. In 2018, NL Hydro achieved Electricity Canada’s Sustainable Electricity Leaderâ„¢ Designation, underscoring its commitment to environmentally conscious practices. Beyond being electricity providers, NL Hydro and NL Power are integral community partners, actively engaged in supporting local initiatives and contributing to the province’s economic and environmental well-being.

TECHNOLOGY

New technologies are revolutionizing the energy industry, with the increasing use of robots and drones for monitoring and surveillance of electricity assets. Devices are employed and remotely operated for tasks ranging from inspecting dam structures underwater to conducting field assessments and environmental monitoring. This approach enhances asset performance, safety, and proactive maintenance planning in the hydro industry.

CONSERVATION

Officials from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and the local Environment Resources Management Association (ERMA) work with Exploits hydroelectric generation facilities to focus on fish passage systems. NL Hydro collaborates with government, conservation, and community partners to ensure these systems, like those at Grand Falls – Windsor and Bishop’s Falls dams, facilitate the annual salmon run on the Exploits River.

COMMUNITY

Through the Energy from the Heart Community Program, NL Hydro actively supports charitable groups and non-profit organizations. Engagement takes various forms, including community partnerships, volunteering, and scholarships. Additionally, NL Power’s partnership with the Cancer Care Foundation Newfoundland & Labrador, has raised over $5 million over the past two decades, making a meaningful impact in the lives of those battling cancer in the province.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s hydro industry employs over 2100+ people throughout the province.
