The Exploits River, which flows through the Exploits Region, is one of the longest rivers in Newfoundland and is known for its excellent salmon fishing.

The town of Botwood played a significant role in transatlantic aviation history. During World War II, it served as a crucial refueling stop for aircraft flying between North America and Europe. The Botwood Flying Boat Base was an important hub for military operations and played a vital role in the war effort.

No need for cars! In the community of Rencontre East, all the roads are made of dirt and therefore ATVs are the main mode of transportation.

There are several remote communities in and around the Exploits Region. For example, the small, remote community of Gaultois can only be accessed by helicopter or ferry!

The Region of Exploits is home to Miawpukek Mi’kamawey Mawi’omi, a vibrant Mi’kmaq First Nations community situated in Conne River. They are one of the fastest growing communities in Newfoundland and Labrador!

The Exploits Region has a rich history of logging and forestry, with many communities originally founded as logging camps. For example, the towns of Badger and Millertown both have deep, historical ties to the logging industry.

The Exploits Region is known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, with many festivals and events throughout the year, including the Exploits Valley Salmon Festival. Many communities also have their own events to celebrate their towns, like Botwood Day and Peterview Day!

Are you a wildlife fan? Well good news! The Exploits Region is the perfect place to spot some of Canada’s most incredible animals, including moose, bears, and caribou! Just remember to keep your distance!

In addition to its historical ties to the logging industry, the mining industry is also very historically significant to the Exploits Region. For example, the town of Buchans was predominantly a mining town up until the mid 1980s.
