Welcome to Miawpukek Mi’kamawey Mawi’omi, First Nations Reserve
Miawpukek Mi’kamawey Mawi’omi is a vibrant Mi’kmaq First Nations community situated in Conne River. The community was granted federal Indian reserve status in 1987, marking the first such designation in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Historically, Miawpukek was a nomadic settlement, with a permanent community established around 1822. The diverse ancestry of its 822 on-reserve and 2,238 off-reserve members includes Mi’kmaq, Innu, Abenaki, and European heritage. It is one of the fastest-growing communities in the province and a model for other First Nations in Canada.
Geographically, Miawpukek Mi’kamawey Mawi’omi is situated on the island’s south coast. The community administers its own school curriculum, emphasizing Mi’kmaq culture, heritage, and traditions alongside provincially authorized education.
