Getting Here & Transportation

Visitors to the Exploits Region can access the area in several ways. The closest airport is the Gander International Airport (YQX), located an hour’s drive east of Grand Falls-Windsor. The St. John’s International Airport (YYT) is the largest airport in Newfoundland, located approximately 4 hours southeast of the Exploits region. Visitors can rent a car or take a taxi from either airport to reach the Exploits region. Additionally, there are several regional airports throughout Newfoundland that visitors may be able to use, including the Deer Lake Regional Airport (YDF), located approximately 3.5 hours west of the Exploits region.

Ferries

Visitors can also reach the Exploits region by ferry, with options including the Marine Atlantic ferry service between North Sydney, Nova Scotia, and Port aux Basques, Newfoundland, or the shorter ferry ride between St. Barbe, Newfoundland, and Blanc Sablon, Quebec.

Once You Arrive

The region itself has a few different options for getting around, including rental cars, taxis, and public transit. It’s worth noting that public transit options may be limited, especially in more rural areas, so visitors may want to consider renting a car if they plan to explore the region extensively. Additionally, visitors should be aware that the region experiences harsh winter weather conditions, which can impact road conditions and travel times. It’s important to plan ahead and allow extra time for travel during the winter months.
