Welcome to McCallum
McCallum, a remote coastal community on Newfoundland’s southern coast, offers a glimpse into a simpler way of life. Accessible only by boat or air, it is often considered reminiscent of pre-20th century communities. Nestled between two hills within an enclosed harbor, McCallum relies primarily on the fishing industry. It’s approximately an hour and a half away from the nearest road in Hermitage.
Named after Sir Henry Edward McCallum, a former Colonial Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, this area has a rich maritime history dating back to the 16th century. In addition to traditional fishing, the community also engages in lobster fishing and aquaculture. Despite discussions of resettlement, McCallum’s heart remains closely tied to the sea, sustaining its way of life.
Local infrastructure includes a public wharf, fire department, bed-and-breakfast, local internet access, ferry service to Hermitage, and St. Peter’s Anglican Church. St. Peter’s All Grade School serves the local students, often utilizing distance education for high school students. ATVs and snowmobiles have become essential tools for various transportation needs.
